Why garages look at TechMan alternatives
From the conversations we have with switchers, the reasons cluster into four groups — none of them "the software doesn't work":
- Tiered pricing. TechMan's published plans (Lite, Advanced and Pro at the time of writing) split features across tiers. Garages that start on a lower tier and later want EVHC, online booking or the customer portal can find the monthly cost climbing as they move up.
- Contract terms. Some garages prefer rolling monthly agreements to longer commitments. Whatever system you're considering, the contract length, notice period and what happens if you add modules mid-term deserve as much attention as the feature list.
- Paying for unused depth. TechMan's technical-data integrations (Autodata, Haynes Pro) are genuinely useful — but a garage that doesn't lean on them may be paying for capability it never opens.
- Accounting double-handling. Many established garage systems grew up before cloud accounting APIs existed, and were built to run their own invoicing ledger — with exports out to Xero or Sage for VAT and payroll afterwards. If that's how your current workflow runs, you're effectively doing the invoicing job twice. The TechMan garages we've migrated were running exactly this: invoice in TechMan, then a CSV export into Xero for VAT and the accounts. "Xero integration" on a brochure can mean very different things — ask any system, current or prospective, the blunt version: is it a live two-way API sync, or an invoice-then-export routine? And ask to see it live.
- Wanting newer customer-facing tools. Video-based inspections, WhatsApp messaging and AI booking assistants have become deciding factors for some garages, and systems vary widely here.
Check these before switching anything
- Your contract. Renewal date, notice period, and any early-exit terms. Diarise the notice deadline today — missing it can cost a year.
- Your data. Request a full export of customers, vehicles and (if possible) job history. You want this in hand before you're mid-migration.
- Your reminder pipeline. MOT and service reminders are next year's revenue. Make sure reminder dates come across in the export, and that the new system will pick them up without a gap.
- Your must-have integrations. Accounting (Xero/QuickBooks), parts suppliers, card payments — list what you actually use today, not what sounded good on the original demo.
What to compare (in this order)
When garages compare TechMan with alternatives, these are the areas where the differences are real rather than cosmetic:
- Usability. How many clicks to book a job, and can new front-desk staff learn it in a morning?
- Online booking. Real diary availability on your website, creating real job cards — not an enquiry form.
- Cloud access. Full diary from home or a phone, not a remote-desktop workaround.
- Customer communication. SMS, email and WhatsApp reminders and updates; digital quote approvals customers actually respond to.
- Scheduling. Ramp, bay, MOT-slot and technician views that match how your floor actually runs.
- Accounting flow. Live API sync to Xero/QuickBooks, or invoice in the GMS and export later? One means the job is done once; the other means it's done twice, every VAT quarter.
- Reporting. Quote conversion and workshop utilisation, not just turnover.
- Pricing clarity. Is the all-in monthly figure on the website? What's extra?
- Onboarding. Who moves your data, how long it takes, and what it costs.

Clarity-GMS — flat-price, everything included
Clarity-GMS takes the opposite approach to feature tiers: one flat monthly plan that includes online booking, workshop diary, MOT slots, video DVI, AI assistants, WhatsApp, a branded customer website and live Xero/QuickBooks sync — with no setup fee, no long contract, and free done-for-you data migration. The accounting ethos is deliberate: Clarity-GMS does the workshop and leaves the ledger to the accounts app, connected at all times by API rather than by export. Multi-seat is free — every staff member gets their own login, across sites, on their own devices. Built by a small garage owner, it may suit independents that want modern customer-facing tools and a predictable bill.
Garage Hive — ERP depth on Business Central
Often chosen by process-driven and multi-site workshops that want serious accounting and reporting built in. It's built on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, with pricing listed from £145/month on a rolling contract; ask how Microsoft per-user licensing applies to your team. More depth, more to learn — see our Garage Hive guide for the fuller picture.
Dragon2000 — workshop plus vehicle sales
A three-decade UK veteran whose DragonDMS combines dealer management with workshop control. Often chosen by garages that also sell cars; workshop-only independents should check they're not paying for sales functionality they won't use. Pricing on enquiry.
MotaSoft (Virtual Garage Manager)
A widely used UK system with a workshop diary, online booking and reminders, popular with MOT stations and fast-fit operations. Check how bookings flow through to job cards and invoicing for your workflow.
Where Clarity-GMS fits (and where it doesn't)
Clarity-GMS is built for independent garages and MOT stations that want the day-to-day — bookings, diary, MOTs, reminders, quotes, invoices — to run with as little admin as possible, plus modern customer-facing tools that bigger systems often sell as add-ons. If you're a large multi-site group wanting deep ERP-style financials inside the GMS itself, an ERP-based system may suit you better; we'd rather say that here than after you've signed. For everyone else, the feature comparison and a 30-minute demo will tell you quickly whether we fit.
Ready to switch rather than research? Our TechMan switching page covers migration, timelines and what's included:

The switch itself is more routine than most owners fear. A sensible sequence:
- Export customers, vehicles and reminder dates from your current system.
- Have the new vendor import them — ideally done for you, in writing, free.
- Run both systems side by side for a few days; take new bookings in the new one.
- Point your website booking button at the new system.
- Cancel the old contract at its notice date.
Done this way, the workshop never stops taking bookings. Our most recent TechMan switcher exported their data, had it imported, and went live over a weekend.
- Free done-for-you import of your customer records
- No setup fee and no long tie-in — rolling monthly
- MOT and service reminder dates carried across, no gap
- Branding, domain and customer website set up for you
